cathy reports: "I just wanted to let you know that i was a la weight loss employee for 10 years in cookeville tn. our owners turned us over to lato and they did not tell us for 2 weeks what would be happening and was very short with there answers. As it turned out they lowered managers pay and i was one and my councelor decided not to except there offer."
LATO is "LA Take Over," which is when the the LA Weight Loss corporation takes over the operation (and ownership, I assume) of previously franchised locations. This seems, in many cases, to be an interim step prior to limiting operating hours and days and, eventually, closing the centers.
cathy writes: "I found out this evening from a employed friend that they are closing the nashville market in october . I feel extremely bad for all employees and the clients and how it all gets done and that is the main reason i could not stick it out. I loved my job and all the clients that i helped and the friends i made a long my journey with la weight loss. I pray for the best to all that is still with them and to all the clients .I very much believe that they had a great program but the way they have chose to do business was wrong and when you dont handle things the correct way it bites you know where… love to all"

LA WEIGHT LOSS: Attorney General Investigates Abrupt TN Closings
August 22, 2008 by admin · Leave a Comment
NewsChannel 9 in Chattanooga covered the all-too-common story of a woman who feels cheated by the abrupt closure of her LA Weight Loss center. The story also tells TN consumers what action they can take to try to get their money back.
NOTE: While the report states “We also learned that the LA Weight Loss corporation has filed for Chapter 7 bankruptcy,” we believe they are referring to the TN franchisee’s corporation, not the franchisor corporation based in Horsham, PA.

A Chattanooga woman signs a $550 contract with a weight loss center hoping she’d lose 75 pounds. She lost big, but not the pounds. She says she lost her money.
Linda Prabish says, “I’ve been abandoned and I just know I’m going to gain the weight back.” The daunting goal of losing weight just got a lot more difficult for Linda Prabish when LA Weight Loss closed its doors unexpectedly.
“She says, well we’re closing. I said how can you close we still have a contract and you still owe me.” Prabish signed a 52 week contract with LA Weight Loss last October. She says she paid $550 to lose 75 pounds. She lost about 50 pounds, but says now she’s losing money.
“I said you do realize this is a breach of contract. And all she could say was I know,” says Prabish.

We also learned that the LA Weight Loss corporation has filed for Chapter 7 bankruptcy. And now the state attorney general’s office is getting involved.
“They need to go to the attorney general’s office to make sure their name is on the list. The attorney general’s office will collectively try to get some money for them,” says Winsett. He goes on to say the attorney general’s office is collecting names for a possible class-action lawsuit.
Information that Prabish is glad to know. “They owe us quite a bit. We stuck up to our side. It’s time for them to stick up to their side.”

LA WEIGHT LOSS: Adding Insult to Injury in Columbia, TN
August 14, 2008 by admin · Leave a Comment
Kandi was a new member of the LA Weight Loss center in Columbia, TN. She claims that she not only suffered the injury of having the center close abruptly 2 weeks after she joined, she also had the added insult of her refund check being cancelled.
Writes Kandi:
The Columbia, TN site closed as well. I was only a member for 2 weeks when they closed. I complianed enough that they refunded me a portion…. then they CANCELLED THE CHECK!!!!!! LA Weightloss is a horrible company and I hope they all close.
Allie writes:
I was a client at the New Bern Store up until Feb when I had to leave for Maturnity. The Center closed shortly after… I was then told to correspond with the Jacksonville store, which I did stating that I wanted a refund. They told me that it was processed and that it would take anywhere form 30 to 90 days. It has now gone pass the 90 day mark. The Jacksonville store is closed and Corp LA Weight loss claims that they are not responsible for these centers because they didn’t receive any funds from them. I Want my money! What Am I suppose to do? Are there any other people out there that are trying to get some direct answers?
Beth Lee writes:
I was also a client at LA Weight Loss and probably like others I had paid all my money up front. I paid for a year supply of LA Bars that I guess I wil never get. The total of these bars was $1,000 for a year which was quite pricey. I was wondering who I could contact to get help? Thanks
We wish we had better answers for you. Stay tuned… we are trying to get some answers. If you have any insights, please leave a comment below.

L A Weight Loss has operated in Colorado for five years.
Programs at the affected centers will be merged into the six centers that will remain open.
Clients of the affected centers have been notified by mail and in person by representatives at the centers, according to L A Weight Loss.
While a spokesperson would not comment on which centers will be closing, a manager at the Colorado Boulevard center told 9NEWS that her location will be closing in September.

“…Since the beginning of the year across the nation LA Weight Loss Centers have dropped a ton of weight by shedding their customers.
Including right here in Terre Haute.
“When channel 10 broadcasted over their news yesterday and the day before is when we became aware that they were closing,” Caroline Came said.
A few months ago, Caroline paid her daughter’s membership in full.
“I am just very frustrated because we have saved put money for this for her,” Came said.
So News 10 went into the L-A Weight Loss Center looking for answers.
When called, the worker said she could not comment on the closing.”
News 10 called again.
“If you have a concern and would like to speak to a customer service representative please press three,” the operator said. “Thank you for calling us today your call will be returned within “48 hours.”
It’s been 24 hours and they have not called back.

Baldwin says she charged more than $700 to her credit card for payments to LA Weight Loss. So finding out the store was closed on Thursday came as quite a shock.
“I was pretty upset I was never notified that they just closed,” said Baldwin.
Baldwin says she is only about halfway through her contract and she the owner still has her money.
“I’m still just left holding an empty bag. I’m in debt now hopefully I can work something out with my credit card,” said Baldwin.
Baldwin says she paid $400 for a year-long membership with the company.
She also claims she bought 20 boxes of dietary bars for $300 and so far has only received four boxes.

Other customers of the weight loss program tell 14 News the store was signing people up and taking their money just a week before closing.
LA Weight Loss released the following statement: “LA Weight Loss franchise company was just notified by the local franchise owner that due to economic conditions he can no longer continue operating the local Evansville, Indiana center.”
The statement went on to leave two contact numbers to reach the owner.
Baldwin called the numbers and says she’s gotten no response.
“I understand times are hard but now i don’t have $708. So I’m hurt just as much as he is. I signed a contract but it needs to be honored one way or another.” said Baldwin.
Now Baldwin tells us she’s working with the Better Business Bureau to solve this problem.
14 News also tried to call the owner and weren’t able to reach him.
