LA Weight Loss Emails Infuriate Member

“I live in Saint John, NB. When they told me that the center was closing they gave us all an email address to contact. When we contact the email address this is what we got in response:

” Dear Chelsey

Thank you for your note.

We are sorry that our Centre closing has caused you some inconvenience and concern.

We acknowledge receiving your request for a refund. Please note, that should you wish to continue on the L A Weight Loss program, you can do so by taking advantage of our “LA-On-the-Go” program. This program will provide you with weekly one-on-one counselling over the phone and access to our optional products. LA-On-the-Go was designed for clients who could not attend the Centres on a regular basis. Should you wish to reconsider, then kindly contact laonthego@lawlmaritimes.ca or call 902-830-7076.

We are now in the process of getting all the client files from the Centre. As the Centre is closing on Dec. 5, we anticipate receiving the files by no later than Dec. 15. Upon receipt of the files we can then look into your request and establish, what amount, if anything, is owing. In the interim, we ask you to please be patient as we do our best to attend to these issues as quickly as possible.

We thank you for your understanding while we go through this process.

Yours truly,

Customer Service”

Then when I replied again on January 5 and asked when I could expect my refund this is the response that I received:

“We take this opportunity to inform you that LAWL Maritimes Inc., the company that operated the Centre you attended, has been put into receivership by the secured creditors of the Company.

Unfortunately as a result of the receivership, the Company no longer has any capital and is unable to provide any refund. We are sorry but we are unable to process your request.

Customer Service”

NEEDLESS TO SAY I AM NOT VERY HAPPY ABOUT THIS AND I SUPPOSE NOT MANY PEOPLE ARE. HOW CAN THEY DO THIS?” WHAT DO YOU THINK? SHARE A COMMENT BELOW

  1. I think it is terrible I received exactly what you recieved. I bet the guy who owned it isn’t poor and out of work I bet he still has every penny he earned even though we don’t get nay money back. -Total scam.

  2. I joined 3 weeks before the center closed down and paid over 1000.00 and I got the same bullshit about the refund… I am extremely pissed off and I am getting sent to collections because of it

  3. I too recieved the same run around. I joined LAWL in Fredericton on Aug 29/08. I paid for 24 wks of weight-loss. I was “talked into” buying the lites in bulk. Thankfully the second bulk I bought was a bulk of 20. When I heard through the news that the centers were closing I still had 10 boxes of lites left. When I went to the center for my final weigh in and to pick up what was owed to me I was told that ” there was nothing left” but that I would be able to get the rest of my lites and get a refund if i wanted. I was told about the great LA on the go program so I did what I was told I sat back and waited for my files to reach the people at LA on the go only to receive an email that stated
    “Hello Sara
I just received word that we cannot offer the On The Go program because we do not have access to any materials or product. If you feel there is a refund coming to you then please email: customerservice@lawlmaritimes.ca

Thanks and have a great day.

and after this I received the msg that I would not be receiving a refund because they went bankrupt…..How can a company that take soooo much money from people, go bankrupt….it doesn’t make sense..
I don’t think there was ever any chance that we would get a refund or that I would ever receive my lites or that LA on the GO was ever an option and they knew this when they closed the doors on Dec 5 2008. I feel like I was taken advantage of like so many other people…..Yes I lost weight and the coaching was great and motivating but I was only half way through my weeks of weight loss and I feel like I was left high and dry..keeps me asking why didn’t I just join Weight watchers instead?

  5. Hi i know how you all feel as well, i joined LAWL the beginning of oct 08 and then brought a friend with the bring a friend promotion, we were never told that the business was having problems, they took our money talked me into getting a visa card to pay for my bulk bars, and then announced they were closing the office in our area down and that we’d have to go to an office an hour away. then the next week we hear they’ve gone bankrupt, we filled out our refund papers as to date have not heard a damn thing from them… i too am tryoig to understand how a company that charges so much money and had so many offices could have gone bankrupt. i’m wondering if i’ll ever see my $300 odd again, i was lucky enough to have only had like 10 box’s of bulk left and went and got them very quickly…

  6. HI I also know how all of you feel. Myself and my sister joined LA weightloss in St. John’s Newfoundland this past oct(08). We didn’t really like the service however upon discovering a very nice lady we decided to give it a try. 2 weeks before hearing it was closing we both were undecided if we should stay. We brought this up to our counsellor who then told us the decision was completely up to us BUT…..all of a sudden our meeting was cut short by a very rude employee who told our lady very bluntly, that our meeting was over and that we were to leave because of an emergency staff meeting. DING DING DING….Bells went off in our heads we kinda let it go BUT and low and behold the centre closed 2 weeks later!! I was outraged because instead of getting a personal call or even a bulk email we had to hear about it over the radio!!! The employees were telling some members but not others!! Both my sister and I went out the day we found out and me being very passive let her do the talking , that was until the manager told a lady next to us that clients were being informed a week ago! Well, I lost it! I spoke my mind firmly not agressively and managed to upset the manager. She then gave me the sob story of her being out of a job before christmas while i came back and told her i was out $500 before christmas. Thank God i didn’t get the bars or products and I can consider myself lucky because some members have lost thousands! The employees were still selling products on the day they closed the doors!! One lady behind me didn’t have a clue what was going on because she was there to sign up!!! They didn’t even bother to call and cancel her because of the closure!! I feel no pity for most of the employees, but my hear goes out to all of us clients in the same boat.

  7. This is just so so so bad!!!! This is a replay of December 2007 when this all happened to me. Yup, you read it right…2007!!!!!! It was Pure Weightloss, formerly LA weightloss. All the same things happened!!! There must be some kind of law or something! This sucks for all of you, and I’m truly sorry.

  8. I am a former employee of La weightloss, it was the most poorly ran company I have ever worked for. I am trying to contact the company somehow regaurding my W2’s…if anyone has any numbers or info they could give me I would really appreciate it! Thank You!

  9. Wow joined one year membership(nov 10,2008) then not even couple days you closed
Called agent then agent said to contact her in couple weeks for refund on credit card
    then under receivership
I smell grab the money and run
What can i do now? 750 bux down the drain

  10. Angry.. am I ever… I spend close to $500 a few weeks before the centers closed and they never mentionned one word about them closing the center… and I sent them an e-mail and they replied with the same results as everyone.
Today I decided to e-mail the customer service as they had never contacted me since Dec 15th and I just got the news that I won’t be getting my refund…. So as everyone knows we were skrewed by this company called LA Weight loss. This is not right… as a customer, we should be able to send a message or complaint to someone so we could have at least some of our money back. some is better than nothing. This is just not right…

  11. I too am in the same basket as the rest of you, with a very similar story. Although I spent nearly 3k (I year with another year of maintenance) and was only provided with < 2 months worth of products. I went to the BBB site and found out that we should contact the Attorney’s General Office (US residences only). Once contacted, I was directed to their site to complete an on-line complaint form. As I understand it, the case is in court and all complaints/forms will be considered during the various arguements throughout the case.

It is very unfortunate because I really like the program and lost 25 pounds in 8 weeks. Interestingly enough, I did contact the office in SD that is still open. They said they have no problem contacting the corporate office and that they are still receiving products as ordered. They also said that they would accomodate the LA-On-the-Go program. However, since they had no record of the 3k I had already paid, I would I to pay for any products ordered. While they have additional contact information, they would not provide it to me..

Good Luck to all of us!

  12. Where could a Canadian citizen fill out a complaint form??? I wouldn’t mind to fill one out!!!! If everyone complains we might get something out of this… never know if we don’t try…

That’s kinda odd that there is still a center open. I thought every LAWL was closed.

  13. I am in the same boat as all of you. I joined at the end of September, and was given no warning when the centre closed. The worst part was that I was out of town and had put my membership on hold for 2 months when they closed, so I wasn’t even able to try to contact them right away.

I have since filed a dispute with my credit card, and they are processing a case to reverse the charge of over $500 that I paid for services not rendered. It’s been 2 weeks since I processed the dispute, and I still don’t have my money, but the credit card company is staying in touch to keep me updated. I suggest that anyone who paid for their program by credit card do the same.

  14. Hi All. For those of you that paid by credit card, please contact the disputes or complaints department of your service provider. In most cases they can and will help you receive a refund for the unused balance of your contract.

    Hope this helps.

  15. What do i do about Care Credit and the unending collection calls because I refuse to continue paying LA Weight Loss when they are in breach of contract. I had already contacted corporate office for a refund for medical reasons and had given documentation from my doctor to my local center. I was having a hard enough time getting anything done there (still hadn’t received refund). I had gone 3 times a week, purchased bars and supplements, and was still owed products that I had already paid for and never received. Now, a collection agency is wanting me to pay for the rest of what was owed if they had stayed open. Is this even legal? Can a corporation no longer in service collect on services not given? I received at least 23 phone calls in the last 48 hours!

  16. Hi everyone, i replied with a comment earlier. well lastnight i was on here and did what Sara and Margo said about the credit card company. well good news, they siad they’re looking into it and with 30 days when they did the proof about the receivership they will credit the money. Everyone should at least try it what have you got to lose?

  17. HELP!! has anyone found a way to get your w2 if you were a former employee??? I havent recieved one and im very worried.. anyone know>??

  18. ASHLEY!!!! I too am looking for my W-2 from LAWL I’ve called everywhere and everyone and have gotten NOTHING!! A lot of my friends who DID receive their W-2s had a surprise tho, they were embellished!! They said that they made $50,000 a year!!! You know as well as I do as former employees that is not true. Good luck

  19. I had the same experience , I was lucky that I didn;t pay a whole lot but I called up my credit card company and they told me that the only was to get money back is 90 days after you give it to them and that since they had filed for bankruptcy that it would be impossible now .

  20. Hello former LA Weight loss clients, I would like to advise that I received the same emails that Chelsey received. I have to say I was extremely upset, to put it politely. My wife and I had just returned to the center in October paid our money and 6 weeks later we are told the store would be closing. With NO success was I able to get a refund.

This leaves a very sour taste in all of our mouths, it would be nice to see those who founded LA Weight loss hold true to their word of a refund, but I won’t hold my breath.

  21. I went to la weight loss for about 1 year. A couple weeks before they closed I purchased extra bars. I then e-mailed them to get my money back and they said I would have to send money for shipping and handling to get the rest of my bars and that they would not reimburse me my money. LA Weight loss did help me with the ‘one on one’ counseling and I lost 25 pounds and have maintained this for several months. I am sure this makes an impact on joining other programs that help with weight loss but I guess I will still be on to another program–but I do have this on my mind. Also, I don’t know why la went out of business, they had a good diet but something must have went wrong. I still say even though I was helped with losing weight I was still ripped off as others were too.

  22. I joined LAWL in January 2007. I lost the weight i needed to .The location that I was attending in Monroe, LA closed with little warning in February 2009. I was due a refund for completing the program. I had also bought extra lights and to this day May 2009 . I have yet to see my refund or my lights. I called the credit card company that I paid for my lites on and I am disputing the charge. Don’t know if it will do any good but its worth a try to get some of my money back. I would never recommend LAWL to anyone. They are a ripoff. Don’t see how they could be bank rupt. They way over charged for all their products. I know they were making a killing on all of us.

But you know what they say about karma. It always comes back to get you.

  23. I also was a member, I actually had very good luck with the center in Billings, MT. I loved everyone there and they were extremely helpful. I stopped going after I reached my goal, but after I gained about 10 pounds back, I was telling a co-worker that I was going back later that day and that’s when I was told they had closed. I too was paying for lites that I had not received. I went to their website and wrote email after email, and FINALLY someone DID contact me back and I did receive all of my LA Lites, I was very surprised. The lady was nice and very helpful. Not sure how happy she’ll be that I did this, but here’s her email!! jdavenport@la-weightloss.com. It took her a couple days to get back to me, but she did and she followed through with everything. Good luck!!
